  罗伯特说：“That’s great! But I heard him shouting at you!”（“太好了！但是我听见他在对你叫嚷！”）
  李雁南说：“He was shouting because of an emergency. You know shouting is a privilege, a tactic which the police make frequent use of.”（“他叫嚷是因为情况紧急。你知道唧唧歪歪是警察经常使用的特权和策略。”）
  罗伯特笑：“Yeah, their shouting is no different from a writer’s use a pen.”（“是的，就像编故事对于作家一样。”）
  李雁南转移话题：“Robert, let’s continue our topics.”（“罗伯特，让我们继续我们的话题吧。”）
  罗伯特笑：“Okay. It seems that changing the topic is a tactic too.”（“好吧，看来转移话题也是一个紧急而有效的策略。”）
  李雁南说：“Anyhow, let’s get back to what we were talking about; it’s my turn to be puzzled now!”（“那么就让我们回到刚才的话题吧，但现在轮到我被弄晕了。”）
  罗伯特提醒他：“You gave examples of paradox. Why shouldn’t someone be serious when a Chinese man invites him to dinner? It sounds absurd!”（“你在给我列举自相矛盾的例子。为什么当一个中国人邀请你吃饭，你不应该当真。太令人费解了。”）
  李雁南解释：“Because such invitations aren’t to be taken literally. It’s no more than etiquette.”（“是的，因为这顿饭压根就不会发生，这只是一个礼仪。”）
  罗伯特笑：“Sounds a little strange! Then what should you do when you actually intend to invite somebody?”（“太有意思了！那么当你真心邀请一个人吃饭，你该怎么办?”）
  李雁南说：“You have to invite your friend repeatedly until he believes your hospitality is not diplomatic language, on the other hand, you don’t have any excuse to regret for your hospitality!”（“你不得不反复邀请你的朋友，直到他相信你的殷勤不是外交辞令，同时你也没有借口为你的殷勤后悔。”）
  罗伯特赞同道：“Sounds reasonable! Go on!”（“有道理! 继续!”）
  李雁南又说：“If you love someone, don’t tell her.”（“假如你爱某人，你就不要告诉她！”）
  罗伯特嘲笑：“That seems pretty dumb and cruel!”（“这既愚蠢又残酷！”）
  李雁南问：“So, are you beginning to appreciate the complexity of Chinese culture?”（“那么你明白中国文化的深奥了吧。”）
  罗伯特感叹：“Yes, I must say, I’m totally perplexed. It’s absolutely a maze!”（“是的，我得说我被弄晕了，简直就是一座迷宫。”）
  这时候，手机里提示：“您的手机里余额不足，请您及时充值。”
  李雁南想赶紧进入正题，就说：“So, you have a long way to go if you wish to understand Chinese!”（“是的，如果你希望了解中国人，你还有很长一段路要走。”）
  罗伯特说：“Yes! It’s a curious nation indeed! Help me, please!”（“是的，不愧是谜一样的民族！帮助我，拜托了！”）
  李雁南想尽快结束谈话：“Well, let’s wait until later. Can you imagine it’s possible to convey the essence of Chinese culture over the cell phone? So, anything else?”（“好了，以后吧。你设想我能够在手机里帮助你理解中国文化的精髓吗？那么，还有别的事情吗？”）
  罗伯特恍然大悟，赶紧说：“Oh! I’m sorry! Well! I’d like to invite you to dine with me before our party. It’s free and I’m not just inviting you to be polite.”（ “哦！抱歉！好了，我邀请你在我们上次约定的酒吧聚会之前吃饭，这是免费的，也不是出于礼貌。”）
  李雁南说：“I believe you.”（“我相信你的诚意。”）
  罗伯特说：“Yes, I know. I’m in a bit of trouble right now. I think you’re the best person to help me out.”（“是的，我知道。我现在遇到一个小麻烦，我想你是我最好的帮手。”）
  李雁南笑：“So, there truly is no free dinner in the world!”（“所以这个世界上终究还是没有免费的晚餐呀!”）
  罗伯特也笑：“Therefore, you shouldn’t refuse my offer.”（“所以，你就不应该拒绝!”）
  李雁南问：“Sounds good. How can I help you?”（“有道理，我可以为你做点什么?”）
  罗伯特说：“Well, I guess it’s a bit of puzzle, relating to the cultures, psychology and behavior!”（“我觉得这是一个谜，和文化心理和行为的差异有关。”）
  李雁南问：“Do you think I’m the key to solve this mystery?”（“你认为我就是破解那个密码的钥匙吗？”）
  罗伯特提醒他：“Aha! Did you forget that you told me you’re an observer?”（“啊哈！你忘记你曾经告诉我你是个观察家了？”）
  李雁南说：“No. I’m a freelance too.”（“没有忘记, 我还说我是个自由职业者。”）
  罗伯特说：“Yes.”（“是的。”）
  李雁南得意忘形了，就说：“Congratulations! You found the right man for the job. Do you know what freelance is?”（“祝贺你！你找到一把正确的钥匙，因为这正是我的强项。你知道自由职业者是什么吗？”）
  罗伯特解释：“It refers to someone who is self-employed.”（“自己雇佣自己。”）
  李雁南问：“Freelance is free plus lance, right?”（“自由职业者就是自由加上柳叶刀，对吗？”）
  罗伯特说：“Right!”（“对呀。”）
  李雁南说：“Yes. I’m just that lance can be used whenever something is amiss.”（“是的。我就是那把柳叶刀，哪里出了问题都可以去划一刀。”
